Or, is it?

I maintained for quite awhile that “Mother’s Day” is exclusively kids and Moms, not husbands and wives. My own Mom left all too soon about a dozen years ago and since then I’ve felt sort of “off the hook” when it comes to gift buying, card choosing or meal planning for Mother’s Day. But, looking at all that my wife does for her Mom, including planning the day for the rest of her side of the family noticing how difficult it’s been for our own children to find the time for planning a similar day for their Mom, I think I’m coming around to changing my mind about the whole “Wife’s Day” thing.
I suppose that a lot of husbands have always been of the opinion that Mother’s Day is inclusive of wives and that husbands should be at the very least responsible for a nice meal or something while ...

City Doesn’t Play Fair With Parking

I’ve been parking in one of our city’s parkades for over a decade. At $65.00 per month or so, that works out to almost $10,000! I’ve endured the city deciding to dedicate one level of parking in this particular parkade exclusively for workers in one building (with their own private skyway, no less) and more recently, the decision to dedicate another entire level to 4 hour parking only. It doesn’t seem fair to to me and I often find myself parking on the unsheltered roof while others who certainly don’t have the same tenure have the privilege of parking closer to their destinations. I made the mistake recently of parking on the level reserved for 4 hour parking and got the unwelcome surprise of a $25.00parking ticket, for parking in the parkade where I have been a “subscriber” for almost 14 years (full disclosure; the parkade was closed for a ...

Craft Beer Catching On In Kelowna

Had the opportunity this week to attend a sneak peek at Manteo Resort in The Mission of their brand new renovation to what was formerly The Wild Apple Grill. Smack Dab opens on March 18th when you’ll be able to have a look at what a million and a half dollar renovation looks like. Smack Dab is a restaurant/lounge meant to appeal to the guests at Manteo and to provide another option for locals looking for a casual meal, after work pint or late evening snack and cocktail. The place is gorgeous with an updated retro-feel. The room itself has been expanded and a private meeting/dining room is available as well. The new patio will really finish it off when that part is completed.
We loved the menu choices, from the forno oven pizzas to the Won Ton Prawns and the amazing beef Short Ribs. The star of the ...

On The Occasion of My 56th

Reflecting back on the occasion of my 56th I found myself going backwards by decades. Ten years ago nothing much stood out, same for twenty years ago and thirty as well. Sure, I can find plenty of moments to remember and life events if I search my memory banks hard enough but as I cast my memory back there one thing does stand out, it was forty years ago that I got my driver’s license. Ok, maybe it was forty years ago, give or take a few weeks that I took the written portion allowing my learner’s, but still 16 stands as a benchmark because of the license. It’s sort of the first thing that officially marks your fledgling steps into adulthood isn’t it? With it comes freedom, freedom to get to places you always go to but faster, and freedom to get to places you’ve never been. Freedom ...

MY MARRIAGE SAVER

We call her Penny though in truth do not actually know her name. She is our marriage saver. We’ve got a strong marriage, my wife and I but there are times when every marriage may need a save or a saver, perhaps even a savior but I digress. The two most stressful things in a marriage over and above discussions about money or child rearing have to be doing renovations together or travelling together, specifically driving while travelling in a new locale. In the past, we relied on that old husband and wife stand-by the man drives and the woman navigates, using at one time, a service station multi-fold road map. We were thankful when technology came along to improve things a bit. I mean the ol’ map system was OK but the navigator never really had a good shot at determining exactly where you need to make that right ...

Disneyland- Change is Good

Disneyland – Change is Good
We found ourselves in Southern California for a week out of the cold and clouds last week and, when in SoCal, its hard not to resist the temptation to go to Disneyland again. Well, at least for me its hard. I was raised on Disney by a father who spent many an afternoon watching Disney feature during his teen years and who dreamt of becoming a Disney animator and who, once we were old enough, took us to Disneyland several times and Disney World as well. My love for the experience continued into my adult years with my wife visiting one of the parks for our anniversary, and two more times with our own kids.
This vacation was just the two of us and we felt that as this is one of the slower times of year for the parks it would be a great ...

"Inside of a Dog" a book review

Ever since Dudley came to live with us I’ve been trying extra hard to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am…and failing by the way but I read this book earlier this month “Inside of a Dog” by Alexandra Horowitz. As dog owners we often struggle with understanding our pets and often wind up frustrated by them as we attempt to apply our communicative techniques to their world. We anthropomorphize them and wind up talking to them as though they can understand, It makes us feel better perhaps but they, of course, don’t understand. What’s needed according to the author is a look inside their umwelt, a look through their eyes or, in the case of dogs, a sniff through their noses. Horowitz is a dog owner and a scientist and this combination gives her a unique point of view through which we can attempt to understand ...

VRBO the way to go For Our Upcoming Get away

We were turned on to “Vacation Rentals” a couple years back and quickly became fans of travelling and staying at privately owned residences. Of course, in some resort areas (Maui comes to mind) this type of accommodation is the norm when you book a condo for a weeks in paradise. We have used vacation rentals in San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Maui and Bend Oregon and we are doing so again on our upcoming San Diego week away. We like it because we generally get more space and privacy for our money than we would at a Hotel or Inn, plus we’ll have a full kitchen and free parking to boot.
Of course the selection varies from city to city but we have almost always had great success in our accommodation searches. It’s really neat to be staying in a different city and feel like you have a home to back ...

On The Horizon (musically at EZ)

Here’s a bit of what we’re listening to this week:
Trains are back with a new song “Bruises”, featuring new country artist Ashley Moore, from their latest album California 37. The song is just starting to “break” but given the band’s track record, this could be hit #3 from this album.

Tristan Prettyman, from San Diego and who used to be with fellow San Diegan Jason Mraz has a catchy song called “My Oh My”

We’re also taking a listen to The Lumineers and Ho Hey which sounds like it was inspred by Philip Phillips’ Home, in fact there is a “mashup” of both that shows their similarities…

and here's that "mash-up" of Home and Ho Hey...
